I need you people....?
A cynic umes, usually based on adverse experience, that a bad outcome is more likely, and ascribes bad motives to people. That's good because it means s/he isn't gullible or vulnerable, and can generally respond to adversity constructively rather than crying about how bad things are. However, it is bad because it isn't a rational approach - a cynic makes umptions that are founded in fear and bitterness, and might not be able to see the good in things and situations that really are just good. Also, the willingness to ascribe bad motives to other people might be expected to "get on you" -- like, if a cynic umes everyone else is on the make, why should we not ume the cynic is also on the make? And why shouldn't s/he really be?
